'Suzhou in the Eyes of Foreigners' exhibition to open on Jan 20

Jan 16, 2025

Suzhou  2025.01.20 - 2025.04.06

What was Suzhou like 100 years ago in the eyes of foreigners? Starting January 20, people can enjoy the charm of Suzhou through the works by foreign painters from a century ago and foreign artists in modern times at the Six Arts Museum in Suzhou.

Co-hosted by Suzhou Tourist Information Center and Six Arts Museum, the exhibition titled "Suzhou in the Eyes of Foreigners" will present nearly 40 pieces of works by eight artists and art enthusiasts from seven countries of Russia, India, the Philippines, the U.S., the U.K., France, and Ukraine. The paintings and images depict the elegance and fascination of Suzhou, a city with a history of 2,500 years in Jiangnan (regions south of the Yangtze River).

Paintings by British woodcut artist Elizabeth Keith (1887-1956). Her pieces showcase the customs, culture and landscapes of Suzhou in 1924.

The painting "Suzhou Impression" by Yuliia Tveritina, a Doctor of Fine Arts from Ukraine, depicts people from all over the world dressed in Hanfu (traditional Han Chinese clothing) gathering in Suzhou's Shantang Street.

Bonny Buckley Blankenbach, a teacher from Nanjing Normal University Suzhou Experimental School, uses well-arranged colors to show the tranquil and elegant beauty of classical gardens in Suzhou.

"Traditional Suzhou and Modern Suzhou," a painting by American artist Dave Alber, integrates the traditional and modern sides of the city and also includes QR codes that allow visitors to tour the city online.

The exhibition will last through April 6.
