China Foreign Ministry Applauds Moroccan Student for Heroic Lake Rescue

Apr 10, 2026

China-Arab TV: Last week, a Moroccan student rescued a Chinese woman who fell into Jinsha Lake in Hangzhou. What he did has touched many. Can you share your comment on this foreigner’s brave act? What is your view and expectation for promoting friendly ties between Chinese and foreign youths and welcoming foreigners into Chinese society?

Mao Ning: I saw the news too. Very much touched by his bravery and would like to give him a big thumbs-up. Kindness knows no borders. This is a vivid and heart-warming example of the vast goodwill between Chinese and foreign youths.

The incident, which occurred earlier near Jinsha Lake, has since drawn widespread attention. At the time, a Chinese woman accidentally fell into the water, prompting an urgent situation.

The rescuer, Ayoub Fadil, a 22-year-old Moroccan student at Hangzhou Dianzi University, acted without hesitation. He had been walking near the lake with his girlfriend when they noticed a crowd gathering. After learning that someone had fallen into the water, he quickly took off his coat and shoes, placed his phone aside, and jumped into the lake.

Fadil swam about five meters before reaching the woman, who had already been submerged. He brought her safely back to shore and, noticing signs of water inhalation, administered basic first aid. After confirming that she was out of danger and once police arrived at the scene, he quietly left with his girlfriend.

The unexpected attention following the rescue came as a surprise to Fadil. “My teacher saw the rescue video and recognized me at once,” he said.

Fadil, who studies software engineering, hopes to build his future in Hangzhou after graduation, contributing his skills in what he describes as a dynamic “internet city.” He also spoke highly of his experience in China, noting that “Hangzhou is a warm city. My teachers and classmates have given me a lot of support.”

According to his teacher, Fadil is outgoing, enjoys sports, and is known for being helpful. He has also volunteered in the student community, including assisting with electric bicycle management.

Local authorities in Xiasha Subdistrict, Qiantang District, said they plan to recommend Fadil for a formal commendation in recognition of his bravery.
