Experiencing ICH in Chengdu's Old Teahouse

Nov 25, 2025

Chengdu

A cultural experience event themed around Chengdu’s intangible cultural heritage and organized by Ascott's serviced residences and hotels in Chengdu recently took place in the historic Shaocheng area of Qingyang District. Hosted at the long-established Daqi Teahouse, which has been in operation for more than six decades, the event invited participants to step into a space that reflects the everyday life and cultural atmosphere of old Chengdu.

Inside the teahouse, bamboo chairs, wooden tables, and the fragrance of Gaiwan tea helped recreate a nostalgic scene reminiscent of mid-20th-century Chengdu. The event featured three interactive workshops—face-mask painting, Shu brocade weaving, and bamboo basket making—allowing families and individuals to engage directly with artisans. Rather than viewing non-heritage craftsmanship from a distance, participants were able to experience the techniques firsthand and take home their own creations. A Sichuan Opera “face-changing” performance added energy to the event, offering a close-up encounter with one of the city's most distinctive art forms.

The initiative was jointly organized by several serviced residences and hotels under Ascott Chengdu. According to the organizers, the event aimed to create a space for cultural connection and community interaction by highlighting the local traditions that shape Chengdu’s unique urban identity. They noted that Chengdu’s inclusive character and rich cultural resources provide fertile ground for immersive cultural experiences that resonate with both residents and visitors.

Participants shared that the hands-on workshops gave them a more tangible understanding of traditional craftsmanship, while the teahouse setting offered a rare glimpse into the city’s living cultural heritage.

The organizers added that they plan to continue introducing similar culture-focused programs in the future, aiming to explore new ways of integrating lifestyle experiences with cultural communication and community engagement in Chengdu.
